The Importance and Virtues of the Tawaf Supplication
Supplication during the Tawaf is considered one of the greatest acts of devotion through which a Muslim draws closer to Allah, the Exalted. It is not merely a recitation of words, but a sincere expression of the servant’s need for his Creator and his supplication to Him in the holiest of places on earth. Frequently remembering Allah and making supplication in this magnificent setting instills tranquility and peace of mind in the heart and strengthens the bond with Allah, the Exalted. Furthermore, circumambulating the Kaaba reminds the Muslim of the Oneness of Allah, making supplications at these moments more likely to be accepted—for it is then that mercy descends and sins are forgiven, and the pilgrim or performer of ‘Umrah hopes to return purified of sins by the grace and mercy of Allah.
Recommended Times and Circumstances for the Tawaf Supplication
- Sincerity and Presence of Mind: A Muslim should pray with a humble heart, confident that his prayer will be answered, and reflecting on the meaning of what he says, free from distraction.
- When aligning with the Black Stone: It is recommended to say “Allahu Akbar” and offer a supplication or remember Allah at the beginning of each circuit of the tawaf.
- Supplication between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone: This spot is considered one of the best places to recite the following well-known supplication: “Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”
- Combining Remembrance of Allah with Supplication: It is recommended for a Muslim to alternate between praising Allah, glorifying Him, declaring His greatness, and asking Him for the best of this world and the Hereafter throughout the tawaf.
- Beginning with praise of Allah and sending blessings upon the Prophet: One of the greatest ways to ensure that a supplication is answered is for the supplicant to begin his supplication by praising Allah and extolling Him, followed by sending blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
A Summary of the Tawaf Supplication
The supplication during the Tawaf is not limited to specific invocations or phrases that must be recited verbatim; rather, it is a broad avenue for communing with Allah through whatever flows from the believer’s heart—remembrance, praise, and supplications for the good of this world and the Hereafter. Muslims should make the most of these blessed moments while performing tawaf around the Sacred Kaaba with sincerity and reverence, following the example of the Prophet ﷺ in offering abundant supplications. We ask Allah, the Exalted and Almighty, to accept your tawaf and sa’i, and to answer your supplications and accept your righteous deeds.
