The Importance and Virtues of the Prayer Before Sleep

Reciting the prayer before sleep is not merely a daily habit; rather, it is a great Prophetic tradition that holds many religious virtues. When a Muslim concludes his day by remembering Allah, he entrusts his affairs to his Creator, which instills tranquility and peace of mind and dispels worldly worries. This supplication protects the sleeper from the whispers of Satan and the evils of the night, and turns their sleep into an act of worship for which they will be rewarded. It also renews faith in the heart and reminds a person of their weakness and their complete dependence on Allah’s mercy and protection, so that they may wake up the next day in a state of goodness and blessing.

Recommended Times and Circumstances for Reciting the Sleep Supplication

  • When lying in bed and completely ready to sleep.
  • After finishing all daily tasks and taking time to rest.
  • It is recommended that a Muslim be in a state of ritual purity (having performed wudu) before reciting the supplication.
  • Sleep on your right side, as recommended by the Prophet, peace be upon him, and then begin reciting the supplication.
  • If you wake up in the middle of the night or feel restless, it is recommended to renew your remembrance of God and supplication before going back to sleep.

A Summary of the Prayer Before Sleep

The supplication before sleep is one of the most important Sunnah practices that grants Muslims peace of mind and protection from all harm, and transforms their sleep into an act of worship through which they draw closer to Allah, the Exalted, at the end of their day. Therefore, we should make a point of reciting this supplication every night so that we may enjoy peace of mind and tranquility until we wake up. We ask Allah to accept your supplications, to protect you with His protection, and to grant you a restful sleep under Allah’s care.
